Child Support
In Missouri, Parents are obligated to be financially responsible for their children. In situations where a child's parents are not married, or are divorcing, the Court will often require one parent to pay the other parent a sum of money every month to cover the expenses of their children.
The amount of child support is determined by the best interest of the child. In determining the appropriate amount of child support, the Court will take into consideration the relative resources, wealth and income of the parents, as well as the specific needs of the child.
It is common for the appropriate amount of child support to fluctuate over time as the child grows and the family circumstances change. In Missouri, when these changes make it necessary to alter the amount of child support, the parties must return to Court for a new Child Support Order. We call this process Child Support Modification.
